Well I’ve never given the answer to a mystery photo before, but with this one I couldn’t resist, because the whole set of photos is neat and I wanted to share.
Our neighbors-in-the-mountains are having an artesian well drilled. By which I mean, they finally found a company that would agree to do the drilling. Evidently it’s difficult to find willing drillers around there, as the water pressure down deep is so high that the risk to the equipment is usually considered to be too great.
Last time we were there, we noticed that the equipment had finally been brought in to do the job. It’s mighty impressive.

Looks like it’s anchored attached to a large tree. Hold firm, tree!

Gauges and levers and tubes. Oh my!

Reminds me of Rube Goldberg.

I would like to drive it.

Or maybe just sit up in there and play like I’m driving.

I did not just say steampunk.

I love the juxtaposition of the industrial and the natural.

Aha!

So! The mystery item is a drill bit! For well drilling. Gnarly things, aren’t they?

Tall tall.

The drilly spot.

So there you have it! A drill bit for well drilling.
Also of interest: there’s a story about a similar drilling effort in a nearby town that went all out of control. Now, instead of having a new well there, they have a new lake. Yikes! My fingers are very crossed!
