Passion flower YAY!

M. noticed last night that we have our first bloom of the summer on the Passiflora caerulea vine. Woo hoo!

P. caerulea

Edit: omg, I was just looking at some previous posts regarding passion flowers, and noticed that in 2006, the blooming was underway in mid-June! Gee, I knew we were having a slow start this summer but two months’ difference? Crazy!

That is gorgeous. Do you think it would grow down here in the heat/humidity?

Oh, yeah, definitely! It’s a tropical plant and I’m amazed that it grows here at all. I just did some googling, it looks like there are only four states where it is now considered a native plant, and Florida is one of them! Also there is a chance that it would bloom year-round in your climate. Cool. You should totally be on the lookout for one. I’ve been seeing them in big nurseries around here, I’ll bet they’re not too hard to find where you are.

Hey, to second the info admin already provided……my mom said that they used to grow it in new orleans and my friend in NOLA is growing some now. I love how they look. Someday, I may try to grow them. What about the cold Oregon coast. Do you think it would grow there? I think it will:)

Hey, Erica! I think it would grow just fine there. Especially if it was in a more sheltered spot. I found lots of good information here:

It’s a UK site but she’s apparently in zone 8b, which is the same as where you are heading. Three cheers for the English Gardener! :)

How beautiful! I LOVE these flowers! Do you get passion fruit as well?

  6. admin Says:

I never have! I wish! Evidently it is necessary to have more than one plant for pollination. Not self-pollinating. Ah well, guess I’ll just have to go get another one sometime. :)

I wonder if you’d have to figure out if it’s male or female and get the opposite or if not all plants work that way? Plus then you’d need bees, unless you were going to take the turkey baster approach. :)

What I really mean to say is: Happy anniversary! Four years! Yippee!

Huh, I wonder too! What I read online somewhere didn’t mention anything about sex. Hrm. Although, if it is an issue, and I accidentally got the wrong kind, I still have a lovely plant to enjoy :)

And Thank You! Yes, yippee! :)

my friend susie gets fruit here in oly…she actually goes out into the garden with a soft artists’ paint brush and does the pollenating herself. she doesn’t look much like a bee, but it does the trick anyway. I don’t think that she has more than just the one mother plant, but I may be wrong…

I’ll bet there are different kinds, maybe some are self-pollinating.
But in case not, I am officially on the lookout for passion vine #2! :)
