Sorry about your dog

ring ring

Years ago when I used to watch live TV, I was looking at Sundance or IFC or some channel like that and I ran across a very funny short film. From what I can remember, the story all takes place inside an unoccupied house — furnished, but seems like the owner is away. All the dialogue (if you can call it that) is messages being left on the answering machine. The first message seems normal enough: a guy calls to let them know he accidentally ran over their dog, and he’s really sorry and the deceased dog is on the porch. In subsequent messages he talks about how he felt bad about leaving the dog outside, and so he broke in and put it in the house, and then wanted to do something about the smell . . . I don’t remember exactly what happens after that but I do remember it made me laugh out loud.

Ever since then, I’ve been trying to find this film again. For years I have searched, off and on, with no luck at all. What I just discovered just now is that it is not called Sorry About Your Dog. The story it’s based on is called Sorry About Your Dog, but the film is called Rattler. And I was all excited because there is a site that sells a download of this movie! But when I tried to get it, I had to stop being excited and start being grouchy because they only sell to people in the UK. Fiddlesticks!
